Michigan Laborers’ Training and Apprenticeship Institute (MLTAI) is a non-profit training facility that is jointly administered by management and union labor.
For nearly thirty years, Construction Craft Laborers' have been able to gain new skills or upgrade their current skills by attending classes at MLTAI. Laborers' who are new to the trade can acquire the necessary skills to enter the construction industry with a degree of confidence.
MLTAI offers this training to union Construction Craft Laborers' completely free of charge. In fact, Laborers' who attend training receive a stipend allowance to help offset travel expenses.
It is the goal of MLTAI to satisfy the training needs of Construction Craft Laborers', Local Laborer Unions and Contractors alike. To accomplish this goal, MLTAI develops specific courses as needed, and if necessary will take the training to the Laborers' by way of satellite courses. The following example demonstrates MLTAI’s dedication to this goal.
When the time came to decommission the Big Rock Nuclear Facility in Charlevoix, Michigan Consumers Power Company had very specific and detailed training requirements for the crew of men and women who would be doing the work. MLTAI staff created a site-specific course that combined an oxy-acetylene cutting and burning class with a hoisting and rigging class. Consumers Power Company retained the responsibility of providing the Radiation Worker I and II training. A course, now in use, which includes all the training required for a laborer to work in a nuclear plant, is “Nuclear Power Plant Decommissioning.”
Other examples of MLTAI’s efforts include creating a site specific hazard recognition class for Laborers' going to work on General Motors demolition projects in Flint, Michigan and doing satellite classes at local union halls, jobsites and contractors yards.
MLTAI has consistently met the demands of an ever changing and more technical construction industry. Thanks to cooperation between union and management we will continue to meet these demands well into the future.
